Christmas Knitting

Christmas Knitting

I’m not quite finished my Christmas knitting for this year yet. I’m still finishing up the foot of the 2nd sock of the fair isle socks I’m making for my Mom. I had one sock finished by Christmas so I blocked it and then wrapped it up. The sock pattern is Lavender Basket by Ilga Leja and I’m knitting it up using 1 ball Zauberball (orange/red/purple) and 1 skein of Riverside Studio SW Merino Nylon Sock in Green. I also knit up a cozy sweater for my Mom. The pattern I used Top Down Swing Coat #603is the by Deb Gemmell using 2.5 skeins of Cascade Yarns Eco+ in 2445 Shire (a pretty green). We saw a knitted sample at my LYS which my Mom really liked so I offered to knit it for her for Christmas if she picked out a colour. The pattern has an interesting construction and is nearly seamless. In fact, I’m thinking of knitting one for myself. I also knit a shawl for my best friend and a shrug for each of her two daughters. For my best friend, I knit the Drift shawl by Tincan Knits using 2 skeins of Mineville Wool Project #3103 (DK weight) in a pretty teal colour that I bought at Gaspereau Valley Fibres on one of our yearly trips to Wolfville. I wanted to knit her a cozy shawl to use as a scarf. For each of her girls, I knit a Lady Cornwall shrug using a skein of my Merino/Silk DK in Ocean Mist and Robin’s Egg. I ran slightly short on the larger shrug so I used some of the leftover yarn from the smaller shrug on the armhole edges. I have created individual projects in Ravelry for these items and you can find more information and notes there. My Ravelry name is...

Handmade Gifts

Handmade Gifts

This year I’ve managed to finish my planned knitted gifts for my best friend and her family earlier than usual and I plan to mail these gifts off to Halifax on Monday. I don’t always manage to have them completed before Christmas. I knit socks for my best friend and her two daughters using yarn from my stash. I’ve been trying out Fish Lips Kiss Heel lately so I substituted this heel into each sock pattern. I like how it fits but I’m not sure yet how well it will wear in comparison with the slip stitch heel flap. For the first pair of socks I knit, I used the Vanilla Latte Socks pattern using Fresh From the Cauldron SW Stripe sock yarn in the Danny & Sandy colourway. For the second pair of socks I knit, I used my basic vanilla socks pattern and a skein of Biscotte Yarns Bis-Sock yarn in the Clown Fish colourway that I bought at the Twist Fibre Festival last summer. For the pair of socks that I knit for my best friend, I used Cookie A’s BFF Socks pattern and using a skein of Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks That Rock in one of the Rare Gems colourways that I bought at Rhinebeck several years ago. Since over the last couple years I have knit cowls for everyone else in the family, I thought this year that I would knit one for her husband. I chose the Woodstacking pattern which is the one I used to knit a cowl for my brother a few years ago and I used 1 skein of my Merino/Silk DK yarn in the Soot colourway to knit it. For my friend’s Mom, who I’ve known since I was 14, I traded a skein of my Silk/Linen Select Lace yarn to my friend, Joanne for some of her handmade soaps and 1 hard lotion bar. I thought that she would enjoy using these special soaps in her new...

Knitted Christmas Gifts

Knitted Christmas Gifts

My friend, Barb received the parcel with the gifts I knitted for her, her two girls and her Mom today. She texted me immediately afterwards to say that she and the girls loved theirs gifts and that she was already wearing hers. Her Mom will get her present the next time that she comes up to Halifax to visit. I made Earth Maiden for my friend, Barb as she really liked my Earth Maiden that I wore when I visited her last summer. Earth Maiden is a rectangular wrap which can be laced up along one side so it can be worn as a poncho. I knit Barb’s Earth Maiden poncho using 3 skeins of my Merino Sport yarn in the Pewter colourway. I knit a pair of socks for each of Barb’s girls. I knit a pair of Caretta Caretta socks for her oldest daughter using a skein of Tanis Fibres Blue Label Fingering Weight yarn in the Jewel colourway. For the younger one, I knit a pair of Man in the Brown Suit socks using 1 skein of my Cash Sock in the Ocean Mist colourway.   Betty (Barb’s Mom) really liked the cowls that I knit for the girls for Christmas last year, so I knit her the same Greenwillow cowl using 1 skein of my Merino Sport yarn in the Robin’s Egg colourway.           For Christmas this year, my Mom bought me a subscription to Natalie Servant’s new e-book Canadian Art Deco Knits when you get a new pattern every month inspired by Canadian Art Deco buildings. My brother gave me a telephone box project bag from...
